However, much of what appears to be a retiring attitude among Burmese women in their social life is actually explained by the difference of Burmese manners from Western manners. In the West the tradition of chivalry dictates many of the surface attitudes to women. They have considerable authority in the home — they usually handle the family finances, for instance —and in many ways more freedom than Western women.
